Md. Samiul Alim

I am a machine learning researcher and hold a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering (Minor in Mathematics, Cum Laude) from North South University, Dhaka, with a CGPA of 3.55/4.00 (mark percentage 89%, grading policy). I was awarded a 75% merit scholarship for sustained academic performance. Over the past three years I have built a research record across vision–language and multimodal learning, efficient deep learning, NLP for social science, and AI for healthcare, with six peer-reviewed publications including three Q1 journal articles and an accepted paper at AACL 2026.

My research centres on a single goal: advancing trustworthy AI at the intersection of language, vision, and society, with healthcare and low-resource, socially sensitive settings as primary application domains. I pursue this across three interconnected directions:

  1. Vision–Language and Multimodal Learning: cross-modal alignment, modality balancing, tokenizer-free byte-level captioning, and the robustness and test-time adaptation of vision–language foundation models.
  2. Efficient and Trustworthy AI: multi-teacher knowledge distillation, context-aware one-shot pruning, and model compression for resource-constrained hardware, together with calibration, uncertainty, and interpretability of deep models.
  3. AI for Healthcare and Society: explainable diagnostic modelling on medical images and neuroimaging, large-scale sentiment and discourse analysis of social media during crises, LLM evaluation on politically sensitive text, and Responsible AI with human-centred evaluation.

I am currently a Summer Research Intern at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC++ SRSE 2026), working on Responsible AI and Human–Computer Interaction with Dr. Sharifa Sultana. I collaborate with Prof. Mohammad Abu Yousuf (Jahangirnagar University) and Dr. Mohammad Ali Moni (Charles Sturt University) on explainable medical AI and crisis NLP, and with Prof. Alex Lamb (College of AI, Tsinghua University) on test-time adaptation of vision–language models. Previously, I worked with Dr. Nabeel Mohammed and Dr. Shafin Rahman at the Apurba-NSU R&D Lab, North South University, where I led CLIPByte, a tokenizer-free multilingual captioning model, and spent two years as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mathematics and Physics across four mathematics courses.

My work has appeared in AACL 2026, IEEE BigData 2025 (CORE B), IEEE ICCIT 2025, Knowledge-Based Systems (Q1, IF 8.0), Neurocomputing (Q1, IF 6.7), and PLOS ONE (Q1), and at the NeurIPS 2026 MusIML Workshop, with further manuscripts under review at ICLR 2027 (A*) and WACV 2026 (A). I review for Knowledge-Based Systems, Array, and PLOS ONE, and volunteer as a science communicator with Biggani.org.
